Bridging the Gap Between Strategy and Execution in QA
Over the last 7 years in the QA space, the most challenging task I have seen others and myself doing is chasing arbitrary numbers like 100% test coverage, aiming for a specific number of test cases or reporting a certain number of bugs and all of that without a clear goal. Trying to achieve this without a goal is aimless.
When asked most people will often say that a common hurdle in QA is that test automation is hard and complex, finding the right tools is difficult or that they lack the knowledge to do it right. However, the actual problem is the lack of a proper test strategy aligned with business goals and finding the right balance between strategy and execution. Instead of chasing numbers, learn how to craft a compelling strategy and apply it to get effective test automation.
In the past, to resolve this, I have created a strategy that uses the executive's language, is tied to the business' goals and redefined what numbers should be targeted.
In this talk we will walk through the problem, explore different hands-on strategies and how they will lead us to have achievable goals that will contribute to the success of the organization. We will see that having 80% test coverage is more useful than 100% and that the quality of bug reports are more important than the quantity.
Key Learnings
- Develop QA strategies aligned with business goals rather than focusing on arbitrary metrics
- Craft and apply effective test automation strategies that prioritize impactful outcomes
- Understand the importance of quality over quantity in metrics like test coverage and bug reporting
